Dr. Ishapathik Das
Associate Professor & Head of the Department
Hi! I am Ishapathik
I am currently serving as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at IIT Tirupati. I received my academic training in Statistics from some of India’s premier institutions—earning a Ph.D. from IIT Bombay, an M.Sc. from IIT Kharagpur, and a B.Sc. from the University of Calcutta. I further broadened my research experience through a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University, USA.
My research lies at the intersection of statistical theory and applications, with primary interests in generalized linear models, Bayesian inference, biostatistics, multivariate distributions, spatio-temporal modeling, and reliability and survival analysis. I actively publish in reputed international journals and collaborate on both theoretical and applied statistical problems motivated by real-world challenges.
I am deeply engaged in teaching and mentoring at the postgraduate and doctoral levels. Over the years, I have introduced new courses, supervised several Ph.D., M.Sc., and M.S. students, and contributed to curriculum development. I also actively participate in academic administration, program coordination, and institutional committees.
I am particularly interested in short-term international teaching and research collaboration, including visiting faculty roles and staff mobility programmes such as Erasmus+, with an emphasis on research-led modular teaching and academic exchange.
Outside academics, I maintain a strong creative interest in music and singing, and occasionally perform both classical and contemporary songs in my free time.

Conference Organized
Organized a national conference on “Recent Advances in Statistical and Mathematical Sciences and their Applications” during October 4-6, 2014 at Academic Staff College, Nainital, India.
Organized a workshop on “Geo-spatial Data Science” during December 9-14, 2022 at Department of Mathematics and Statistics, IIT Tirupati, India.
Area of Interests
My research focuses on the development and application of modern statistical methodology, with particular emphasis on dependence modeling, complex data structures, and real-world applications in health, reliability, and environmental sciences. Many of these topics also form the basis of research-led, modular teaching for postgraduate students.
Publications
Over the years, I have published research articles in reputed peer-reviewed journals, presented papers at international conferences, and contributed to academic book chapters. My research spans diverse areas including statistical modeling, environmental statistics, time series analysis, robust design, and Bayesian methods.

Students
I have had the opportunity to guide several students in diverse areas of Statistics, including environmental statistics, multivariate modeling, finance, and time series analysis. Below is a list of students under my supervision:
Teaching
I have experience teaching a wide range of courses at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels across different institutions. During my Ph.D. at IIT Bombay, I served as a Teaching Assistant for several MSc courses. I later taught undergraduate and postgraduate statistics courses at the Department of Statistics, Kumaun University. Since January 2018, I have been teaching core and elective courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at IIT Tirupati, and have also contributed to Ph.D. coursework, refresher programmes, and orientation modules.
My teaching philosophy emphasises conceptual clarity, adaptability to diverse academic backgrounds, and active student engagement. Working with students from varied educational backgrounds has helped me refine my teaching approach to accommodate different learning needs within a single classroom.
I strongly believe in fostering a positive and engaging learning environment. As Richard Feynman famously observed, “Students don’t need a perfect teacher. Students need a happy teacher—one who excites them to come to class and grow a love for learning.”
I strive to nurture curiosity and enthusiasm, going beyond the delivery of information to ignite a genuine interest in the subject.
I am open to delivering short, modular guest lectures from these courses or offering research-led specialised topics for international teaching and academic exchange programmes, depending on the needs of the host institution.
